Adding a deck? 5 questions to ask before you start

February 16, 2016

Thinking about adding a deck to your home?

Great idea. Decks extend your living and entertaining space and help you enjoy the outdoors. I know – you’re already picturing BBQ’s, outdoor loungers, and long lazy afternoons.

A good deck can also add value and appeal to your home.

But before you crack into building a deck here are 5 questions you should ask.

5 question you should ask before you build a deck.

1. DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT SPOT FOR A DECK?

If you’re going to the effort of adding a deck you’ll want to make sure it has practical as well as aesthetic appeal – which is driven largely by location. So you’ll want to think carefully about the best spot for your deck:

  • Can you locate it on the warm, sunny side of the home or facing the view?
  • Does this spot have privacy, sun and shelter from prevailing wind and weather?
  • Do you have suitable access from the home? (or is that another project!)
  • Can the deck be positioned close to the kitchen? (think BBQs)
  • Can a deck be integrated with existing landscape, garden planting or pool?

2. WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR DECK TO DO?

Being clear about how you plan to use your deck will help determine its size and design, as well as any safety features.

  • Do you entertain a lot?
  • Do you have children?
  • What sort of furniture will you have?
  • How will you shade the sun?
  • What will you use the deck for?

Also consider privacy on your deck. You may need to add some sort of screening to provide privacy from neighbours or the street. It pays to think about this in the planning stage so you can incorporate it into the design.

3. WHAT SAFETY FEATURES WILL YOU NEED?

Safety features, such as handrails are required for decks that are 1 metre or more above ground. If you’re incorporating steps into your deck consider the step height and width for ease of use (and also for extra seating).

Non-slip surfaces and adequate bracing are also important when it comes to safety.

4. ARE THERE ANY BUILDING CONSTRAINTS OR CONSENTS NEEDED?

Approach the Local Authority or Council to ascertain whether Resource and/or Building Consent is required before construction starts. Decks less than 1 metre above ground and 10 metres square may not need to go through consent procedures, but it pays to check first.
You should also check for any possible infringements near boundaries. And before you start digging make sure you’re clear of any sub soil drains and services, (eg electricity, gas, water, or sewer lines).

5. CAN YOU ADD SOME WOW?

When adding a deck, consider the style and architecture of your house so that the addition complements your home. With the basic design sorted you can then add some features to enhance your deck such as:

  • Lighting
  • Sound
  • Storage
  • Cooking facilities

Depending on your budget you can get totally carried away. Anything goes from a complete outdoor room with full kitchen, to a basic timber deck you build in a weekend.

We often get asked by our customers to add a deck to their Ezyline Prebuilt Home. It’s a great way to add space and enjoy the outdoors – especially if the home is a bach!
