Smart Design Ideas for Small Transportable Homes

If you live rurally or own a small section in town, you’ll know that building on your land isn’t always as simple as it sounds. Getting consents, finding the tradies, battling the weather… it all adds up. That’s why a lot of New Zealanders are turning to transportable homes. They’re solid, quick to build, and best of all, affordable.

Our transportables are used in all sorts of ways. The kids’ first home on the family farm, a rental on the back of a lifestyle block, a cost-effective home on a small urban section, or a tidy bach by the coast. If you’re thinking about going transportable, we’ve put together a few design ideas from years of delivering Ezyline Homes around the North Island.

Why Consider One of Ezyline’s Small Transportable Homes

Our range runs from a simple 50 m² one-bedroom transportable home right through to four-bedroom options for family living. We build everything in the controlled environment of our Mount Maunganui or Feilding yards, and deliver to your site. No delays due to rain or half-built frames sitting out in the weather. Every home is constructed by qualified tradespeople, comes with a 10-year structural warranty, and can be customised transportable home to suit your needs. Narrow driveway or tricky site? The skinny transportable  house series solves problems that a standard plan can’t.

Smart Layout & Space Planning with Ezyline Homes

The first question we usually ask is, “What does daily life look like for you?”. Some people want something small and easy to care for, a warm place to sleep, cook, and relax. Others want an extra bedroom for visitors or future-proofing. A one-bedroom plan is great if you want minimal upkeep, while a 60–80 m² two-bedroom transportable home gives you more room without going overboard.

Our modern, open-plan layouts help a lot with small homes because we avoid cramped hallways or boxed-in rooms, opting for open-plan spaces which make a compact footprint feel much bigger.

Maximising Livability for Comfortable Small Transportable Homes

Storage is usually the thing people worry about most when buying a small transportable home. The trick is to build in smart storage from the start. Cupboards in the areas you need them, shelving that makes the most of the wall height, and furniture that doubles as storage. A bench seat with storage underneath or a fold-down table can save more space than you’d think!

Light, Design & Finishes That Handle NZ Conditions

A small home feels a whole lot bigger when it’s filled with natural light. That’s why our designs use bigger windows and open layouts that give the home a calm, spacious feel. And because rural and coastal spots can cope with a bit of weather, we use good insulation, durable cladding and materials that are made to last. If you’re on an exposed site, like some of our transportable homes in Northland, we can also help you position windows and choose finishes that keep the house warm in winter and cooler in summer.

Why Ezyline’s Approach Makes Small Transportable Homes Work

We’ve been doing this a long time, and we’ve got it down to an art. Plan it well, use great builders, and deliver it on time. By building in a controlled environment, we make sure there are fewer surprises and a better finish, and by offering the ability to tweak cladding, layout and finishes, your home won’t look like everyone else’s.
